Reflection
There is a time where everyone dies, and like all people who are dying, they want to take the opportunity to make decisions concerning life and death . For those who are dying, they go through the 5 stages of dying, and these stages are about the behavior and how they think. The 5 stages of dying are denial and isolation, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptances and they were created by Kubler-Ross in 1969. (Santrock, 2018).
Denial and isolation is where the person who is dying denies that they are going to die. And when that denial can’t be maintained anymore it turns into anger. (Santrock, 2018). When they are in this stage they start feel rage, resentment, envy and question why this horrible this is affecting them. A lot of them will direct their anger at others or even God because they are upset.
Once they get out of the anger stage, they go into the bargaining stage. This is where they have hope that their deaths can be delayed and they will try to do this by bargaining, which is often to God, and if their death is delayed, they will devote their life to God, or into serving others. Then the next stage they go into is the depression stage. This is where they know that their deaths are certain and they may be grieving about this and that is totally normal. Lastly, comes the last stage and that is called acceptances. This stage is where they accept that their going to die and their okay with it. They get a sense of peace from it. (Santrock, 2018).
I chose this topic because I found it interesting to read about and it helped me to understand a bit better about why people who have an terminal illness, etc. I found the 5 stages of dying significant because it does help explain why those who know they are dying and those who know they don’t have a lot of time left, may behave the way they do, and what they may be thinking. This could help the family members of the person who is dying be able to understand why they are behaving the way they are.
My thoughts on this concept that it is important for people to understand these stages. I think it would be very beneficial for everyone to to acquire this knowledge so they may have a better understanding maybe why the dying person is so angry or why they want to be alone. I think it would be very beneficial to society so that it may help people be less judgemental about those who are dying.
